Botany BC 2011 Program  (revised July 1, 2011)

 

Botany BC is an annual gathering of professional and amateur botanists from B.C. and nearby areas.  This year`s event will be in the Tatlayoko Lake area.   It will feature botanical forays in the Potato Mountain meadows and alpine as well as local wetlands and grasslands and other alpine areas.  There will be interesting and diverse talks on the Thursday and Saturday evenings.  Everyone is welcome.  Registration is $50 (regular) before June 15 and $60 after June 15. 7:00 pm – 7:45 pm:  Meet at Bracewell’s Ranch at the S end of Potato Mountain near Tatlayoko Lake.  Snacks and non – alcoholic beverages will be available. BYOB if you like.

·        Presentation – The Potato Mountain area and ethno-ecology of Mountain Potato (Claytonia lanceolata) by Carla Mellott. Carla will talk about her thesis research.

 

Friday July 15th, 2011

 

8:30 am to @ 5:00 pm:  Full day Hike in the Potato Range

Meet at Bracewell’s Ranch for a botanical hike to Potato Mountain.  We will hike up the S aspect flower meadows featuring balsamroot and spring beauty. Some sections are relatively steep.  The more adventuresome could make it into the parkland/alpine where the terrain is gently rolling with many lovely flowers. 

 

Alternate hikes starting from Bracewell’s Ranch for those who are less ambitious or who would like to move at a slower pace are also available.  There are several walks which start from Bracewell’s Ranch and which can take anywhere from 40 minutes to 2-3 hours to complete.       

 

@ 5 pm to 6 pm Plant ID session – at Bracewell’s Ranch

 

6:30 pm – 8:30 pm Barbeque Dinner at Bracewell’s Ranch and informal entertainment.

9:00 am Muster at the Nature Conservancy’s Lincoln Creek Ranch (north end of Tatlayoko
Lake
bordering Lincoln Creek which is a tributary of the Homathko River from the East.)

 

9:00 am – 9:45 am - visit the Nature Conservancy’s Lincoln Creek Ranch

 

10:00 am to @ 5:00 ish - local hikes working our way north towards Tatla Lake

1.    Wetland Hike  @ 3 hours

2.    Grasslands Hike @ 3 hours

 

5:30 – 10 pm Evening at Tatla Lake Community Centre at Tatla Lake   *note the change of venue for the evening*

·        Dinner catered by a local chef (this is a “dry” venue so please respect the request to bring no alcohol into the Community Hall)

·        Annual General Meeting    (otherwise known as “where in the province are we going next year?”)

·        Presentations

1)     Peter Shaughnessey will talk about the area and Nature Conservancy of Canada`s work at Lincoln Ranch

2)    "Botanical implications of altered fire regimes in the Chilcotin"  by Kristi Iverson

3)    “Goodbye Aster, hello Eurybia, Eucephalus, Oreostemma, and Symphyotrichum. Embracing change and 'continuous improvement' in alpinetaxonomy and nomenclature” by Jim Pojar 

 

 

Sunday July 17th, 2011

 

9:00 am   Day Long Field trips  - enroute home.  Meet at Lincoln Creek Ranch (at the north end of Tatlayoko Lake).

  Option 1) Perkins Peak  - drive to the alpine and botanize in  the meadows.

   Option 2) Grasslands at Chilko Lk – drive to the Lake and botanize in the area.
